Ok, this is scary. We actually had a workplace shooting incident turn up at our trauma center lately. I comforted myself with the idea that people come to the hospital after such incidents. Remind me to check and see if our security guys have guns. I think they do.

Our security officers don’t have guns, but they do have close contact with the local police. There is often at least one police officer in the ER in any case, due to our proximity to neighborhoods with gang activity.
The probability that an armed security officer could have prevented the nurse and secretary from being shot appears to be fairly low, although they might have been able to head the man off before he shot the person in the parking lot. They clearly were able to get the local law enforcement officers to the site quickly, since he was stopped in the parking lot. Scary incident, indeed.
