In case you were wondering, I am still alive (unlike far too many of our patients over the last few nights). This night I discovered that it is possible to go more than 12 hours without eating, drinking, going to the bathroom, or sitting down for more than half an hour. Slightly amazed that I’m still not hungry or thirsty, just tired. We had a bad trauma come in at midnight, and spent the next six hours working on him. I don’t know how long it would take to burn out at this pace; but internal medicine and peds can’t compare with this excitement and urgency.

Coming up this weekend: a Catholic PA who refuses to prescribe birth control; a scandal in the residency program; the brilliant intern; my first dead patient; and more.
