The other night, I dreamed that I was back in the OR for the first time in ages (unclear whether as a student or an intern). I was first-assist to the attending.

The problem was that I had completely forgotten how to scrub, or gown up, or maintain sterile fields. I was contaminating everything in sight, touching the gown with bare hands, breaking all my gloves. It was awful. The attending was furious. I woke up about the point where he told me to leave his OR and never come back. . .

So now I find myself running through the procedure for scrubbing in, verifying that I do still remember the steps.

How to sew, that’s another story; I’m sure I really have forgotten all I once knew about holding needles.
